UK News - Kumali Orphans Project
Arising out of the goat improvement project a further project was started to focus on the plight of orphans in the Kumi district by our colleagues in Uganda, Miriam and Emmanuel Maraka. Dolen Ffermio assists our colleagues by providing orphans of primary school age with one of the following:
As well as improving their diets, the orphans will be able to sell any surplus to pay for their secondary school fees and other essentials, thus gaining security and skills for their futures. The whole operation is run under the auspices of CREATE, (the Centre for Recreation Education, and Appropriate Training for Everyone), established by Emmanuel and Maraka in 1998 in Kumi. Older orphans who have had to leave school through lack of resources are trained as Youth Workers in animal health, such as vaccination, de-worming and nutrition. They also help to train and supervise the younger orphans within the families who care for them. They form choirs, drama and sports groups and, with their newfound respect, they can encourage other teenagers to have responsible and healthy lifestyles.
CREATE is a Resource Centre set up by Emmanuel and Miriam Maraka where youngsters can come to study – for most of them, the only place with lighting and seats. Miriam is also able to advise on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS prevention. The Kumi Orphan Project grew out of this to help the many orphans, who are the most disadvantaged in this poor community. We are the major funders for this Project through the gift catalogue and a large number of orphans have benefited already and are now using their gifts most productively,
