Dolen Ffermio would like to thank all who participate in fund raising and all those who make donations - we thank you most sincerely.

August - Bike Ride 2010
Lorna and the others are going to do it again, but this time the other way round from Holyhead to Cardiff, week beginning 16 August.  Ed Howarth from the Gold Star programme has already alerted all the Wales-Africa community link groups and invited them to take part during the stage nearest to them, which should add an exciting dimension to this epic event.  If anyone wants to take part for a short ride, a stage or the whole thing, or if you want more information, please contact Liam Brown on 01743 356970 or liam@tangomango.co.uk.  Also, if anyone would like to join us in Holyhead to see them off, please contact Val for details.

May 23rd and 28th to 31st (Bank Holiday Weekend)
Trefonen Hill Weekend - despite one torrential downpour on the Saturday, the rest of the weekend had good weather and loads of people turned out to enjoy all the different activities.  They raised the magnificent sum of £8,000, with our share being £4,000.  A great big thank you to Helen Francis and to everyone who organised the events, helped and took part.

May 15th 2010 - Lorna's Plant Sale
Sunshine the whole morning for a change, a lovely, jolly atmosphere and we raised £647. Thanks to everyone who contributed by helping out or buying.

April 2010 Lindsay is running the London Marathon
Congratulations and very well done to Lindsay for raising the grand total of £997, including gift aid. A remarkable achievement for just one fundraiser.

FUNDRAISING UPDATE MARCH 2010

We have been very fortunate in the large number of groups, churches and schools who have helped us to raise funds in the past six months, as well as the individuals who have donated or contributed to the Christmas Catalogue.  Apart from the funds, which are obviously very welcome and much needed, we are also greatly heartened by the expressions of support that come with them.  We are also absolutely delighted with the response we have had from many primary and secondary schools especially when the two primary schools at Llansilin and Llanfair Caereinion made their own very moving and thoughtful presentations on our work before we gave a talk and showed a film there.

Schools:  Ysgol Bro Cynllaith (Llansilin), Ysgol Pennant (Penybontfawr), Ysgol Gynradd (Llanfair Caereinion), Maesbury (Oswestry), Llanfyllin High School, Learning Support Unit at Nottingham Bluecoat School
Groups:  Rhydycroesau Ladies’ Guild, Llansilin WI, Llansilin Over 60’s, Bwlch y Cibau WI, Tregynon Craft Group, Llanfyllin Show luncheon
Churches; Llansilin, Llanfechain, Biddestone, Capeli Bro Llansilin a’r Cylch, Bontdolgadfan Presbyterian, Craigfryn Chapel, Cresent Presbyterian, Gweinidogaeth Bro Caereinion

We were honoured to be chosen by Councillor Lynnette Kretchmer as her Mayor’s charity which has resulted in generous collections from the Mayor’s Service in St Myllin’s and the traditional Christmas Eve Carols in the Square.  The variety concert organised by Chas Nicholson in Llansilin in November was hugely enjoyable and, with grateful thanks to all those who performed for us and who came along, we raised over £1000 into the bargain.  Our youngest fundraisers, Nieve and Eira, raised a staggering £700 and below, October 2009, is Nieve’s own account of their adventure.

March 2010 ---- Results of Christmas Catalogue Sales
A huge thank you to everyone who supported the Christmas catalogue appeal.  We are delighted to announce that, despite the recession and uncertainties about the future, £8095 was raised for the Kumi Orphan Project.  These funds are going to make the world of difference to the lives of hundreds of orphans in the forthcoming year, keeping them in school, giving them skills, security and hope for the future.

From Miriam comes this message: “It’s such a good thing to hear that your gifts are many, given the current economic crisis. This contribution is still generous and kind of all the gift buyers. We shall always be very grateful for this kind and wonderful gesture of love.  We will work to allow better lives to be realised by many of the families that will receive these various gifts.”  (The latest report from Miriam on the progress of the Project sent to us in February is available by Clicking Here.)

October 2009 TO THE TOP OF SNOWDON FOR KUMI ORPHANS by  Nieve Walling (age 10)
On October 10th 2009 it was raining when Mum, Dad, Eira and I arrived at the foot of Mount Snowdon so we put on our waterproofs and set off. The summit was covered in mist and cloud.  As we walked the sun came out. When we got to the top we put our coats back on as it was very cold and windy. It took us so long to walk down it was pitch black for the last bit and we wondered if we were going the right way, then we saw car lights in the distance and we knew we were nearly there. We managed to raise £700 for the Kumi Orphan Project.

June 2009 DOLEN FFERMIO’S EPIC BIKE RIDE FOR UGANDA The bike ride was successfully completed between the 13th and 18th June and for a detailed report from one of the participants please Click Here. Our heroic cyclists, led by Lorna, not only completed the ride from Cardiff to Holyhead in grand style but also managed to raise a staggering £3124 in sponsorship.  Jennie Castle increased this by £70 at the Llanfyllin Show by asking people to guess how long they were in the saddle. This had been an ambition of Lorna’s for a long time and this year is a very fitting time as the Goat Improvement Project in Eastern Uganda has reached a critical stage in its development which will require considerable funding.  Dolen Ffermio is planning to import pedigree Boer and Toggenburg breeding stock from South Africa which will establish two nucleus herds of pure-bred goats.  This is essential to ensure a reliable source of cross-bred animals for the village goat improvement schemes and also the Kumi Orphan Project. The project is ongoing but it’s a very slow process and very important to get everything just right, in particular authenticated pedigree records. These are such worthwhile projects and will make a considerable difference to the lives of farmers and their families in the poorest rural communities, as well as the large number of orphans whom Dolen Ffermio supports.

May 2009 We are delighted to tell you that we raised £755 at Lorna’s Spring Sale (including £160 in donations).  There weren’t quite as many customers as last year and certainly the weather wasn’t nearly so kind to us, so that is an excellent result.  We are most grateful to everyone who donated plants, cakes, raffle prizes and goods for sale and to all those who turned out to help and buy.

January 2009 The fantastic news is that the Christmas catalogue has raised £10,441 for the Kumi Orphan Project.  We are finding it hard to believe, especially amidst all the doom and gloom of the economic downturn.  This obviously has everything to do with our wonderful visitors and the way in which they inspired everyone they met.  Emmanuel has sent a letter of thanks (see Uganda News), both for the amount raised and the warm welcome they received during their visit.

December 2008 The village of Dolanog donated the amazing sum of £1,000 from their Christmas Fair and Carol Service, including a donation from the Wynnstay Group PLC.

November/December 2008 Almost £2,000 was raised as a direct result of the visit of our Ugandan partners for all aspects of Dolen Ffermio’s work from collections in no fewer than 10 churches and at the Penybontfawr Choir Concert.

July 5th 2008 - Sun Shines on Dolen Ffermio Sale There hadn’t been a sale to raise funds for the Ugandan Goat Improvement Project for 2 years, but the good people of Llanfyllin and surrounding area made up for it on Saturday July 5th.   They turned up in droves to Lorna Brown’s thoroughfare behind Bronafon in Bridge Street and, between them, raised the grand total of £1,003. These funds will go a long way to meet the costs of the Goat Improvement Centre in Eastern Uganda which seeks to upgrade the small local goats with larger exotic breeds in order to increase milk and meat production to improve the livelihoods of poor farmers and to combat malnutrition in children. Dolen Ffermio would like to give our wholehearted thanks to all the generous people who donated such a lot of wonderful items, to everyone who came along to buy so enthusiastically and to all our willing helpers.
